Abstract

Background. The development of the Muslim community in modern Russia is inextricably linked with the Soviet past. At this time, the socio-historical conditions of the functioning of religious societies changed significantly, a forced transformation of Islamic traditions and institutions took place, the structure of community self-government bodies changed, and the nature of state-Islamic relations changed. The purpose of the work is to identify the origins of intracommunal conflicts in the Muslim mahalla, identify their typology, consider conflict resolution mechanisms in the 1950–1980s, analyze the extent to which the state and the Muslim administration of Muslims based on the Middle Volga region are involved.
Materials and methods. The article is based on the analysis of modern scientific literature and the study of archival materials of the State Archive of the Ulyanovsk region. A special place is occupied by the registration cases of Muslim religious societies, complaints and statements of believers. These materials shed light on intracommunal relations, make it possible to reconstruct the causes, course and results of conflicts, to determine the extent to which the state and spiritual governance are involved in them. Methodological and methodological tools include the analysis and comparison of the primary information of historical sources and facts of scientific literature. The comparative historical method makes it possible to identify and compare the sources and types of intracommunal conflicts in the pre-revolutionary and Soviet times, in Muslim and Orthodox religious societies, to highlight their specificity and common features.
Results. The origins and types of intracommunal conflicts are investigated, the mechanisms of their resolution are described, the measure and forms of administrative involvement of the state and the Muslims’ Muslim administration, the legislative aspects of resolving conflict situations in Pre-revolutionary Russia and the USSR are disclosed. Typology of conflicts in Muslim communities is built according to two criteria – by subject and composition of participants. A comparative analysis of intracommunal conflicts in the pre-revolutionary and Soviet times, in Muslim and Orthodox religious societies.
Conclusions. Conflicts in Muslim communities were one of the manifestations of the systemic crisis of the Soviet model of organization of a religious society. In comparison with the pre-revolutionary period of history in Soviet times, the typology
of conflicts changed: the composition of participants and the subject. The legal, procedural, ideological unpreparedness of the Soviet government bodies to help resolve intracommunal conflicts, exacerbated the systemic crisis of the makhalla’s administrative structures. If, during the imperial period of history, conflicts within the community were “diseases of growth” of the Islamic confession, then in Soviet times they were signs of its crisis state. The study of intra-community conflict allows us to complement our understanding of the functioning of the Muslim mahalla in the 20th century.
